Chapter Clerk - a message from the Dean

A good Chapter Clerk is the key to the Cathedral's efficiency, professionalism and financial stability.  It is conceivable that something might happen in the Cathedral without the Chapter Clerk's knowledge, but I rather doubt it.  Paul Whittaker has served as Chapter Clerk with great distinction for the past 14 years.  He has the Yorkshireman's dislike of spending money needlessly, something that has saved the Cathedral from falling into financial difficulties.  He calls a spade a shovel, as Yorkshire people do, and, famously, is not afraid of making his colleagues feel uncomfortable at times.  But above all of this is the warmth of his humanity, his inimitable sense of humour and his profound Christian faith.  We thank him for everything he has given us and wish him and Ingrid a long and happy retirement in their beloved North Riding. He leaves us at Easter.

Mr Philip Davies comes to Durham as Chapter Clerk-designate on 15th March with long experience of working for the church at a senior level, most recently as Diocesan Secretary in the Diocese of Newcastle.  We wish him every success in his new work, and welcome Philip and Michele to their new home among us. He will be installed in May.
