Handel: The King shall rejoice
Handel: My heart is inditing
Mozart: Mass in C minor
Conductor: James Lancelot
Accompanied by members of Durham University Orchestral Society
A performance of selected works from Handel’s much loved Coronation Anthems, followed by one of Mozart’s more rarely performed works; the majestic and powerful Great Mass in C minor. The origin and purpose of this lesser known of Mozart’s works is shrouded in mystery, but it is undoubtedly a personal and profound statement about his faith, taking inspiration from the works of Handel and Bach to create something transcending his own time. To hear this work performed in the magnificent Durham Cathedral is an opportunity not to be missed.
Tickets: £15 full view, £10 restricted view (£6 & £5 concessions available from request from the choral society email account choral.society@durham.ac.uk, and also on the door on the evening of the concertA Durham University Choral Society promotion
Tuesday 20 March, 10.15am, St Mary’s and St Cuthbert’s Church, Chester-le-Street
Saint Cuthbert’s Day Walk
Join the Northumbrian Association for its annual St Cuthbert’s Day Walk from Chester-le-Street to Durham Cathedral; symbolic of the transfer of the body and the relics of St Cuthbert from Chester-le-Street to Durham in 995AD and formation of the Saxon White Church, a precursor of today’s Norman Cathedral, by the community of St Cuthbert. Gather at
St Mary’s and St Cuthbert’s Church for the eight mile guided walk.
For more information call John Danby on 0191 389 2699.
Tuesday 20 March, 3.00pm – 4.00pm
The Receiving of St Cuthbert’s Banner
The Northumbrian Association has commissioned the creation of a
new St Cuthbert’s Banner to replace the earlier banner that was destroyed during the Reformation. The replacement has been created by a team
of North-East artisans, the whole project having been funded by John
and Lyn Cuthbert. It is hoped (weather permitting) the banner will be carried up the Bailey in Durham on the final stretch of the annual St Cuthbert’s Day walk (see above) and formally received into the Cathedral sometime between 3pm and 4pm. If the weather is inclement the banner will be taken straight to the Cathedral to be formally received when the walkers arrive.
The banner will also be used in procession during the St Cuthbert’s Day Festal Evensong taking place at 7.30pm.
Saturday 24 March, 10.00am – 5.00pm, Prior’s Hall
Benedictine Day
The Cathedral’s Benedictine heritage is a living tradition that shapes lives today drawing from the Cathedral’s history as a monastery. The day offers an introduction to the Benedictine tradition, including a behind-the-scenes visit to some of the monastic buildings, an overview of the Rule of St Benedict and conversation about how this wise tradition can help with modern discipleship.
All are welcome to this free event, please email events@durhamcathedral.co.uk to reserve a place. Please bring your own lunch or eat in the Undercroft Restaurant. The event is free but a suggested donation of £10 to help cover costs can be made on the day.
