Vacancy for a Part Time Secretary

This is a unique opportunity to join the team at Durham Cathedral to provide high quality administrative and secretarial support to Canon Rosalind Brown in her work as Nave Canon and Canon Librarian.

The role will involve dealing with correspondence and administrative tasks associated with arranging and (when appropriate) attending meetings, drafting minutes, liaising with volunteers to ensure the smooth delivery of Nave ministries including Cathedral chaplaincy and the Sunday School, dealing with telephone and email enquiries, and other duties as specified.

A good standard of education is required (minimum 5 GCSEs at grade A-C or equivalent), good keyboard and layout skills, and an ability to use own initiative.  The successful candidate will ideally have experience of working in a similar role, including working with a range of volunteers.

Lindisfarne Gospels Choir: The Winged Ox MP3

You can download an MP3 of The Winged Ox, a choral composition written to celebrate the arrival of the Lindisfarne gospels to Durham Cathedral this summer. The piece depicts one of the 4 winged animals which represent each of the Evangelists. These are gloriously illuminated on the title pages to each of the Gospels: Ox for St Luke, Lion for St Mark, Man for St Matthew and Eagle for St John. The origin of the 4 animals symbolically representing each Evangelists are lost in the medieval mists of time, but are believed ot go back to just before St Cuthbert's era. It is generally acknowledged that the Ox stands for strength, service and sacrifice as depicted in St Luke's Gospel.

Composed by Mish Kelly, and rendered into the current format by Alison Purvis, the MP3 is designed so that the 3 vocal lines are easily distinguishable. Singers in the Lindisfarne Gospels Choir can pick out the individuals parts. This piece was first performed on Sunday May 12th in the Cathedral as a dry run for the big concert on the 30th June, at 2.00 in the Cloister Garth, celebrating the arrival of the Gospels into Durham the next day.
