The Very Reverend Michael Sadgrove

Dean of Durham

The Very Reverend Michael Sadgrove is the Dean of Durham. The Dean is the principal dignitary, after the Bishop, of the Cathedral and, on behalf of the Cathedral Chapter, directs the life and work of the place.

Mr Paul Whittaker

Chapter Clerk

Mr Paul Whittaker is the Chapter Clerk. As a member of the Cathedral Chapter, the Chapter Clerk is in effect the Administrator of the Cathedral and transacts much of the day-to-day business of the Chapter, also acting as Deputy Treasurer.

The Reverend Canon Dr David Kennedy

Sub Dean and Canon Precentor

The Reverend Canon Dr David Kennedy is the Sub Dean and Canon Precentor. He oversees the Cathedral's liturgy and worship.

Dr David Hunt

Lay Member of Chapter

Dr David Hunt is a Lay Member of Chapter and has responsibility for the Cathedral Library. In the wider Cathedral Community, he acts as one of the assistant ministers at the principal celebrations of Holy Communion and, on certain other occasions, acts as a server. He is a former Senior Lecturer in the Department of Classics at the University of Durham.

The Reverend Canon Rosalind Brown

Residentiary Canon

The Reverend Canon Rosalind Brown has responsibility for the nave of the Cathedral, traditionally the public face of the Cathedral's life including visitors, education, pastoral care and relationships with the wider community.

The Reverend Canon Dr Stephen Cherry

Residentiary Canon

Canon Stephen Cherry is the Diocesan Director of Ministry, leading the ministry team which provides opportunities for learning for laity and clergy. He is also facilitator of the North East Regional Training Partnership.

Archdeacon of Durham

The Venerable Ian Jagger is Archdeacon of Durham and Residentiary Canon of Durham Cathedral where he serves as Canon Treasurer.

Mr Adrian Beney

Lay Member of Chapter

Mr Adrian Beney is a Lay Member of Chapter. He is a member of the Cathedral's Development Steering Group and one of his children is a chorister at the Cathedral. Mr Beney works as a fund raising consultant.

Cathedral Chaplain

The Reverend David Couling is Cathedral Chaplain, sharing in the pastoral work among the Cathedral community.

The Reverend David Sudron

Succentor and Sacrist; Minor Canon

The Revd David Sudron is Minor Canon, Succentor and Sacrist. He is responsible for most of the day-to-day administration of the worship of the Cathedral.

The Reverend Nils Chittenden

Minor Canon

The Revd Nils Chittendon is Chaplain at St Mary's College, Durham, and runs his own consultancy business.

The Reverend Peter Sinclair

Minor Canon

The Reverend Peter Sinclair works in management consultancy and has recently initiated 'After Sunday' to help Christians integrate their faith and their daily work.

Canon James Lancelot

Master of the Choristers and Organist

James Lancelot is the Master of the Choristers and Organist. He directs the provision of music in the worship at Durham Cathedral, trains the Cathedral Choir and the Cathedral Consort of Singers, and conducts the majority of the choral services.

Mr Keith Wright

Sub-Organist

Mr Keith Wright is the Sub-Organist. He assists the Organist in the direction of the music at the Cathedral, training and conducting the two choirs, and accompanies the majority of the choral services.

Miss Anne Heywood

Chapter Steward

Miss Anne Heywood is the Chapter Steward. She is responsible for all visitor matters including supervising more than 500 volunteers who act as stewards and guides in the Cathedral. In addition the Chapter Steward arranges all non liturgical events and is the Cathedral's Press and PR Officer.

Mr Peter Church

Finance Officer

Mr Peter Church is the Finance Officer. He manages all financial matters on a day-to-day basis and runs the Finance Office which administers income and expenditure as well as wages and accounts.

Mr Jon Williams

Land Agent

Jon Williams is the Land Agent. He manages the Cathedral Chapter's rural estates, residential properties, river banks, and woodlands. He advises on energy, security and the Cathedral's works programme. He is also in charge of fire safety.

Mrs Elizabeth Baker

Education Officer

Mrs Elizabeth Baker is the Education Officer. She oversees the provision of educational material and guides for the school, college, and other educational groups who visit the Cathedral. She co-ordinates the visits of nearly 20,000 young people each year.

Mr Jeffrey Hewitt

Head Verger

Mr Jeffrey Hewitt is the Head Verger. He runs a team of five vergers who keep the church in good order on a day-to-day basis and prepare it for the many special services and events which occur each year. He attends to the good conduct of the services as they proceed.

Mr Bob Matthews

Clerk of Works

Mr Bob Matthews is the Clerk of Works. He oversees the day-to-day management of a large team of stonemasons, builders, electrician, plumber, joiners, labourers, and others who work throughout the year to maintain the fabric of the building and the decent order of its precincts.

Mr John McGowan

Head Porter

Mr John McGowan is the Head Porter. Together with his colleagues, he attends to the security of the Cathedral precincts and helps to maintain good conduct in and around the Cathedral. The porters facilitate communication between members of staff in many different locations.

Mrs Gaye Kirby

Head of Development

Mrs Gaye Kirby is Head of Development, working to plan and implement an ongoing development strategy for the Cathedral.
