Events and Special Services - May 2013

Listed below are the events taking place in the Cathedral during May 2013. Regular services are not affected unless otherwise indicated. You can also download the full service schedule.

Please note that finishing times are approximate. Sometimes, with a service, it depends on the length of the sermon.

Preparations for all services and events will restrict access to most of the Cathedral from between 30 to 90 minutes before the time of starting. Equally, these restrictions will be in place for some time after the service or event finishes.

Everyone may attend any service held in the Cathedral. However, many of the events, such as concerts, require a ticket for which there may be a charge.

If you are planning to visit the Cathedral on a day when a special service or event is on, you are advised to contact us directly to make sure that you are not disappointed.

Wednesday 1st May

09:30 - 16:00: Exhibition of the Work of Romey Chaffer, Undercroft Restaurant. Wednesday 1 May - Friday 31 May.

19:30 - 21:30: Faure Requiem: City of London Sinfonia & Durham Cathedral Choir, tickets from the Gala Theatre Box Office 0191 332 4041

Saturday 4th May

04:30 - 06:30: Dawn Chorus Bird Walk, on the Cathedral's Woodlands and Riverbanks. Sturdy footwear and appropriate dress for the weather required. Free event. Please contact events@durhamcathedral.co.uk or 0191 386 4266 to reserve a place.
11:00 - 12:00: Hild Bede Service

Sunday 5th May

15:30 - 16:30: The first performance of Michael Berkeley’s Easter Anthem, commissioned by Durham Cathedral Choir Association, will take place at Evensong followed by tea and the DCCA AGM in the Prior’s Hall. All are welcome
16:30 - 17:00: Refreshments served in Prior's Hall by the DCCA

17:15 - 18:00: Evensong sung by Birkdale School Choir

09:30 - 11:30: The Chorister School Open Morning. An opportunity to visit The Chorister School, the prep school on the Durham World Heritage Site, that offers day & boarding education to girls & boys aged three to 13. See www.thechoristerschool.com for more information
09:30 - 17:00: Hidden Gems – Photography exhibition in the Galilee Chapel. 11 May–24 May. Peter Lowis, a Senior Steward at Durham Cathedral & a keen amateur photographer, combines these two interests to reveal some of the usually concealed delights of Durham Cathedral.
14:30 - 16:00: Special event in the Cathedral Shop to launch a new range of hard back journals as part of the Judy Hurst Collection.

Monday 27th May

10:00 - 12:00: Family Fun - Launch of the Family Geology Trail. The trail costs £1 and is available from the Cathedral Shop and the Information Desk at the back of the Cathedral. Meet at the North Door.
17:15 - 18:00: Evensong sung by RSCM Voices North
19:30 - 21:30: Renaissance - Chapter House concert of MacMillan's 'Missa Dunelmi'. Tickets available from the World Heritage Site Visitor Centre, or on the door (£12/£8 concessions/£6 students)

Tuesday 28th May

09:30 - 17:00: Faith, Inspiration and Stitch. The Galilee Chapel. 28 May-23 June. A selling exhibition of work by the North East Embroideries' Guild. This exhibition celebrates the legacy of the Lindisfarne Gospels through embroidery.
10:00 - 12:30: Conservation Task Team Day - Join a Volunteer Task Team and help conserve and enhance the Cathedral’s Woodlands and Riverbanks. Sessions are free, booking required. Contact events@durhamcathedral.co.uk for more information and to reserve a place.
