Events and Special Services - February 2012

Listed below are the events taking place in the Cathedral during February 2012. Regular services are not affected unless otherwise indicated. You can also download the full service schedule.

Please note that finishing times are approximate. Sometimes, with a service, it depends on the length of the sermon.

Preparations for all services and events will restrict access to most of the Cathedral from between 30 to 90 minutes before the time of starting. Equally, these restrictions will be in place for some time after the service or event finishes.

Everyone may attend any service held in the Cathedral. However, many of the events, such as concerts, require a ticket for which there may be a charge.

If you are planning to visit the Cathedral on a day when a special service or event is on, you are advised to contact us directly to make sure that you are not disappointed.

Thursday 2nd February (Candlemas)

19:30 - 21:00: Sung Eucharist on the Feast of Candlemas (incense used). Cathedral is lit by candlelight

Sunday 5th February

10:00 - 11:00: Matins and Admission of Choral Scholar and Chorister

Monday 6th February

13:15 - 14:00: Lunchtime Concert: Portico Chamber Choir (Quire)

Wednesday 8th February

17:15 - 18:00: Evensong (Men's Voices)

Friday 10th February

09:30 - 10:00: Chorister School Pre-Prep Assembly
15:00 - 16:00: Durham School Half Term Service

Monday 13th February

09:00 - 16:00: Family Activity: Sails, Whales and Sea Tales. It may still be frosty and cold but not to early to think of long walks by the sea. Visit the new seaside space in the Education Centre to hear stories of the sea and then make a sea-inspired creation.
13:15 - 14:00: Lunchtime Concert: Renaissance Chamber Choir (Chapter House)
19:30 - 20:30: Celebration of Chaplaincy in the work place and in organisations across the North East of England

Tuesday 14th February

09:00 - 16:00: Family Activity: Sails, Whales and Sea Tales. It may still be frosty and cold but not to early to think of long walks by the sea. Visit the new seaside space in the Education Centre to hear stories of the sea and then make a sea-inspired creation.

Wednesday 22nd February (Ash Wednesday)

11:30 - 12:30: Jesus and Conversion to God; A presentation by Canon Professor Mark McIntosh. To be followed by a time of silence.
19:30 - 21:00: Sung Eucharist for the beginning of Lent and the Imposition of Ashes (incense used)

Saturday 25th February

14:00 - 15:00: Show and Tell: Mapping the World in the Cathedral Library. Tickets: £6 (£5 concessions) available from the Gala Theatre Box Office 0191 332 4041

Monday 27th February
