Weddings, Baptisms and Funerals
We are often asked if we hold weddings, baptisms and funerals in the Cathedral, and the short answer is that we do. Unfortunately, because this is a Cathedral, the long answer is that we don't hold them very often. These special services are available only to regular members of the Cathedral congregation whose names are recorded on our Community Roll, with a small number of exceptions.
With the Cathedral being held in such affection by so many people, we regularly receive requests for the celebration of such occasions from people living throughout the city and county, but almost always we refer them to the parish clergy, whose privilege it is to baptise, marry and bury those who live in the areas for which they have spiritual responsibilty.
There is an old rumour that graduates of the University of Durham may be married here, but it is untrue. However, there have been recent legal changes in the Church of England which widen the eligibility for marriage in a parish church; many of those who enquire will find that they are now entitled to be married in one of the city's parish churches, within whose bounds they will have lived whilst reading for degrees.
If you think that you are entitled to arrange one of these special services in the Cathedral, or need help in getting in touch with your parish priest, please email the Sacrist.
