The Chapter reports to the Cathedral Council which meets twice per year. The Bishop is the Visitor of the Cathedral. Chapter consists of the Dean, five Residentiary Canons and three Lay Members.

The Dean, who is appointed by the Crown, is the head of the Cathedral Foundation and the chairman of the Chapter, and on its behalf directs the life and mission of the Cathedral as well as being its public face in the wider community of the city, diocese and region. As senior diocesan priest he is a member of the Bishop's staff and is ex officio a member of the governing body of Durham University. The Dean is The Very Reverend Andrew Tremlett.

Opportunity to become a lay member of Chapter

The Cathedral Chapter seeks two new lay members to share the governance of the Cathedral. This non-remunerated, three year (renewable) appointment offers an opportunity to help to shape the life of one of the North East’s greatest institutions. Chapter members must be passionate about Durham Cathedral’s core purpose, which is to worship God, share the gospel of Jesus Christ, welcome all who come, celebrate and pass on our rich Christian heritage and discover our place in God’s creation.

We are looking for someone with property and estates expertise at board or partner level, and a further member with an accountancy or other financial background, similarly experienced at board or partner level. The latter appointment will be made with a view to the person becoming the Cathedral’s Treasurer.

The commitment involved is attendance at monthly Chapter meetings (usually on Tuesdays from 9.15-3.00), three School Governors meetings and one residential meeting a year, as well as additional meetings within your portfolio and other occasional meetings. Lay Members of Chapter must be communicant members of the Church of England or a church in full communion with it. As part of our commitment to safeguarding and safer recruiting, you will be asked to provide references and we will obtain a new DBS clearance for you.

If you are interested in supporting the Cathedral in this way, please apply for further information which is obtainable from Mrs Katharine Smith, stating which role you are interested in.

Expressions of interest in the form of an up to date CV with a covering letter explaining your reasons for being interested in this opportunity should be should be sent to Katharine Smith electronically by 30 April 2017. If you would like an informal conversation with Philip Davies, the Chapter Clerk, before submitting an expression of interest, please contact Katharine Smith to arrange a time for a phone conversation.

If you know someone who might be interested, please draw this opportunity to their attention.
