Two of Durham Cathedral's volunteering teams have been nominated for the Association of English Cathedrals Volunteer of the Year awards.

During National Volunteer's Week (Monday 2 – Sunday 8 June) the Association of English Cathedrals will announce two winners for their volunteering awards. There are two categories, one will be an individual winner and the other will be an award for a volunteering team.

Both our Special Service Stewards and Junior Church teams at the cathedral have been nominated for ‘Team of Year’.

The dedication, enthusiasm, and energy of our 500+ volunteers helps to make Durham Cathedral such a special place, you can read below the nominations for the two teams this year and explore how to become a volunteer.

Special Service Stewards

This team are a cornerstone of worship, facilitating a welcoming atmosphere within the cathedral and ensuring all of our special services run smoothly.

The service stewards have been nominated primarily for their commitment to running successful services at Durham Cathedral. Their attention to detail leaves no stone unturned, from knowing which processional routes risk draughts needing a candle to be seamlessly relit, to calmly assisting with mid-service medical emergencies.

Most recently, the team provided support at the Royal Maundy service, attended by their Majesties The King and Queen. Alongside this, the stewards assist running regular Evensong and Procession.
