Durham Cathedral is delighted to announce the appointment of Susie Doyle as Director of Development. Susie will be leading on fundraising activity for the cathedral, including overseeing vital income from donations and legacies, as well as raising grant funding.

The cathedral has recently set out an ambitious mission and vision (Vision 2033) to help focus and direct its objectives in the lead up to 2033, the 900th anniversary of the completion of Durham Cathedral. Within Vision 2033, Durham Cathedral is focused on delivering exciting priorities around pilgrimage, prayer and proclamation, with the overarching purpose of offering every person the opportunity to encounter God.

Guy Sampson, Chief Operating Officer said,

"Susie’s work will be of central importance to the delivery of the mission of Durham Cathedral, forming a key pillar of the Cathedral’s financial strategy. The Director of Development role is also an important position within the Cathedral’s senior leadership team, and I am excited to have Susie join us as a colleague."

Susie brings over two decades of senior leadership and fundraising experience to her new role. She has secured funding for a wide range of charities from the emergency services, housing, heritage and faith sectors, and most recently served as Chief of Staff at The Auckland Project.

With a strong track record in strategic planning, income generation, and organisational change, Susie is deeply committed to supporting organisations with a strong sense of purpose and public value.

She commented,

"I feel very honoured to be joining Durham Cathedral at such a pivotal moment in its journey. The Vision 2033 strategy is hugely inspiring, and I’m excited to play a part in helping it come to life. This is a place that holds huge personal and spiritual significance for so many—including myself—and I look forward to working with the team here as well as our donors, and the wider community, to ensure the Cathedral continues to thrive for generations to come."

Philip Plyming, Dean of Durham added,

"At Durham Cathedral we have a clear vision of where we being called in the years leading up to 2033. It is wonderful to have someone of Susie’s experience and skill joining the team as we seek supporters and partners in this vision and shared mission. As Director of Development Susie brings strong knowledge of the North-East and wider context, and I look forward to working with her very much."

Susie begins her new role at Durham Cathedral on Wednesday 30 April, 2025.
