Durham Cathedral is one of the world's best known buildings and is a place of worship, welcome and hospitality.   We employ around 150 staff who are supported by more than 650 dedicated volunteers.


Tenor Lay Clerk

Job Title: Tenor Lay Clerk
Durham Cathedral 
Contract: Permanent
Salary:  £10,931.79 per annum
Hours: The normal weekly timetable is as follows, (subject to review):

9.20 - 9.50am - Rehearsal 11.15am - Sung Eucharist
10.00am - Matins 3.30pm   - Evensong
This is normally a free day for Lay Clerks, Evensong being said, or sung by a visiting choir
Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday and Friday
4.30 - 5.00pm - Rehearsal 5.15pm    - Evensong
(Evensong on Thursday is sung by men’s voices only)
4.15 - 5.00pm - Rehearsal 5.15pm    - Evensong
There are occasional extra services, a few arranged at short notice, over and above the regular services.  In addition, the choir normally goes into the diocese several times a year to sing at services or concerts; it also takes part in the Northern Cathedrals Festival, and joint Evensongs with cathedral choirs in Newcastle and Edinburgh.  The Choir performs a wide, exciting and varying repertoire extending from plainsong works written in Durham eight centuries ago to works written in the last ten years, including works commissioned especially for the Cathedral. 
Please note that undergraduate students are not eligible for Lay Clerkship; they are welcome to apply for Choral Scholarships as and when such Scholarships become available.

Job Title: Stonemason
Location: Durham Cathedral
Contract: Fixed-term until the end of September 2018
Hours: 37.5 hours per week
Salary: £25,635 per annum
Durham Cathedral has a proud history of employing its own stonemasons to undertake the repair, maintenance and conservation work required on this UNESCO World Heritage Site.
We are looking to recruit a suitably qualified and experienced stonemason.  A recent quinquennial report has identified a longer term requirement for additional stonemasonry skills which the Cathedral is looking to address in the very near future. 
If you have an NVQ Level 3 in Stonemasonry, experience of working on a Grade 1 listed building site or heritage site and you can demonstrate your enthusiasm for the stonemasonry craft, please follow the link below to find out more.

Visitor Desk Assistant  

Job Title: Visitor Desk Assistant
Location: Durham Cathedral
Contract: Fixed term until end of June 2018
Hours: 16 hours per week Normal working days Sunday, Monday and Wednesday
Salary: £7,280.00 per annum

The Cathedral Office is seeking to appoint a Visitor Desk Assistant.  The Cathedral has opened its new Visitor Desk to create a more professional and efficient response to visitors.  It works in tandem with the volunteer Stewards and Guides who provide a welcome and information service to all.  The post-holder will assist in the daily operation of the Visitor Desk, including the sale of exhibition & events tickets, tours, guide books and accepting donations as well as signposting and information to visitors to the Cathedral.
