Durham Cathedral is one of the world’s architectural treasures; a UNESCO World Heritage Site which has been a place of pilgrimage for 1,000 years and today welcomes over 750,000 visitors each year. The magnificent Romanesque Cathedral not only provides the unique setting for the many services, events and activities that take place daily within its walls, but it also inspires them.
The financial and operational challenges of maintaining such a unique site are very significant and faced with a major conservation and repair programme, the Cathedral Chapter is making a strategic step-change in the way it manages the care of its historic buildings
Foundation 2020 aims to build an endowment of £10 million by 2020 to support the annual cycle of planned maintenance and repair of the Cathedral’s buildings to ensure they are safeguarded for future generations to enjoy. To kick start the campaign, the Heritage Lottery Fund has awarded a grant of £1 million to the fund which is available to match donations we raise on a 1:1 basis, so every £1 donated is doubled.
