The Broderers are a team of
dedicated embroiderers
who create and maintain
the Cathedral's vestments
and other sewn items.

They are led by Tracy A Franklin, a professional embroiderer, based in Durham City. On Ash Wednesday a new set of Lenten altar frontals and vestments designed by Tracy A Franklin were dedicated. This is her first commission for the Cathedral and represents over four years work. The Frontals and Vestments have been made using unbleached linen, the traditional material for Lenten Array. They depict the Crown of Thorns and the grasses of the wilderness, both of which represent Christ’s self-consecration and suffering but also renewal and forgiveness.

Notable examples of their outstanding work are to be found in the Nine Altars Chapel, but many other contributions to the beauty of the Cathedral may be seen and enjoyed by a discerning visitor.
