The Cathedral is used regularly as a venue for concerts and special events. These can be talks and lectures to sell-out concerts in the Nave.

Duties include checking tickets, directing audiences to their seats, and should an emergency arise, helping the audience to safety. Performers at concerts can be choirs such as The Sixteen or the Cathedral Choir. Special events vary from talks by authors as part of the Durham Book Festival to large scale site specific art installations such as Lumiere, a light festival across the whole of Durham produced by Artichoke. The programme is varied and never dull.
