The Tour de Cuthbert

The ‘Tour de Cuthbert’: A Team Cycle Event in Support of Foundation 2020 (without leaving the Cathedral!)

On Saturday 23 March 2019, as part of St Cuthbert’s Festival, we’re putting together a team of volunteers to cycle on an exercise bike the distance from Lindisfarne, St Cuthbert's original resting place, to Durham, his home from 995. Starting at 9.15am on Saturday, we’re looking for a cohort of Tour de Cuthbert cyclists to get on our bike and help us with the 90 mile ride.

It took the community of St Cuthbert around 120 years to make the same journey, but we’re hoping to complete it before the Sung Eucharist for St Cuthbert at 5.15pm… Can it be done?

We’ll be asking visitors to the Cathedral on that day to support our cycling efforts by making a donation to our Foundation 2020 campaign.   Individual riders may also like to seek their own sponsorship from friends and family.

If you’d like to get involved with our cycling effort, whether it’s for 15 minutes or 15 miles, please get in touch with Matthew Kirk at If you’d like to come along and encourage our efforts on the day, as well as enjoying all the other activities of St Cuthbert’s Festival, we’d love to see you  You can also make a donation to Foundation 2020 online. Don’t forget, all donations to the campaign are currently being matched by the National Lottery Heritage Fund (formerly the Heritage Lottery Fund).
