Make a will month is a joint initiative by Durham Cathedral and local solicitors, running this October.

What is Make A Will Month?

Each October, Durham Cathedral partners with local solicitors to make the process of making your first will, or updating your current will accessible, easy and stress free.

The solicitors involved in the initiative have all agreed to waive their usual fee for the preparation of a single or joint will, and instead invite you to make a donation in support of Durham Cathedral.

How much should I donate?

The suggested voluntary donation is £80 for a single will or £130 for a joint will, all of which goes directly towards Durham Cathedral. This suggested donation is a discount from the standard solicitor’s fee for making a will.

Which Law firms are involved?

Why should I make a Will?

A will enables you to dictate what should happen to your money, possessions and property after your death. It will make things easier for your family and friends, and ensure that any financial dependants receive a correctly allocated share of your estate. Making a will also ensures that your estate will not be subjected to more Inheritance Tax (IHT) than it needs to be.

If you don’t make a will, the law will decide upon the way in which your estate is shared – which may not fall in line with your wishes.

Who is eligible for Make A Will Month?

This special promotion is open to everyone, whether you have recently bought a house, got married or had children – or simply want to get organised.

Leaving a legacy to Durham Cathedral in your Will

Durham Cathedral relies partially on the support of donations and legacies. Leaving charitable donations to non-profit organisations, such as Durham Cathedral, in your will can be a transformational act of charity.

Large or small legacies and donations to Durham Cathedral enable major restoration works to the Cathedral’s fabric and development projects which serve to enhance people’s engagement and enjoyment of the Cathedral for generations to come.
