Stone Auction

19 October 2019, 1pm-3pm

Ever wanted to own a piece of history and secure Durham Cathedral's future at the same time? Now you can by taking part in Durham Cathedral's first ever Stone Auction.

Stones of all shapes and sizes taken from the top of the central tower during the recent renovation project will be sold with the help of the local auction house Anderson & Garland. Many thanks to Baldwins who are sponsoring this exciting event.

Proceeds from the auction will support our Foundation 2020 campaign which aims to raise £10 million for the future care and maintenance of Durham Cathedral's buildings.

Viewings of the stones up for auction will take place in the Works Yard, on the south side of the cathedral, with a few on show in the DLI Garden, on the following dates:

  • 14 October 9.30am-4.30pm
  • 15 October 9.30am-4.30pm
  • 16 October 9.30am-4.30pm
  • 17 October 9.30am-4.30pm
  • 18 October 9.30am-4.30pm
  • 19 October 9.30am-1pm

The auction itself will take place on 19 October, 1-3pm in the Chapter House at Durham Cathedral. If, however, you are unable to join us on the day you will be able to take advantage of our online bidding. To bid in the auction you must register before the auction starts. More information about how to register is available further down on this page.

In addition to the auction, small individual pieces of Durham Cathedral stone will be sold for fixed prices outside the Chapter House between 11am and 1pm. These small pieces are not part of the auction, and are not available to buy online.

For more information or any queries please contact development@durhamcathedral.co.uk

Durham Cathedral would like to extend a special thank you to Baldwins Accountants, our Central Tower Sponsor, for also choosing to Sponsor the Cathedral's Stone Auction on the 19th October 2019.

Baldwins have shown their unending support for the Cathedral for a number of year, including being an inaugral member of our Foundation 2020 Club, a Gold corporate partner, and of course, sponsoring the Central Tower's rennovation. Now they are choosing to extend further support by sponsoring the 2019 Stone Auction in which stones from the Central Tower will be sold to raise money for Foundation 2020.

Thank you Baldwins!

Transport of Stones

Successful bidders are responsible for the collection and delivery of any and all stones won at the auction.

Smaller lots can be collected from the cathedral following full payment from 21-25 October, 9.30am-4.30pm. Please contact our Development Assistant, Olivia Willmore, on 0191 374 4055 to arrange a suitable time for collection.

Durham Cathedral will be unable to assist in the removal of larger stones from the works yard from 19 October to the 25 October.

The larger stones, along with any remaining smaller lots left uncollected, will be removed from the cathedral by Corner’s Transport to their warehouse in Barnard Castle, DL2 3PX on 28 October. Successful bidders will then be able to arrange collection or delivery of their stones from 4 November from this location.

Corner’s Transport can provide a quote for transporting your stone anywhere within the UK. To get a quote from Corner’s Transport or arrange a collection time please contact Stephen Corner on 0183 362 7252.

Please be aware that you can also arrange to collect your stone in person or use another transport service to collect your stone from Corner’s warehouse.

Please note that if your stone has not been collected from the Warehouse by 18 November you will be charged £3 a day for storage and Corner’s will not release your stone until this has been paid. If you have any questions please contact Corner’s Transport.
