Help us manage manuscripts, books and artefacts spanning centuries

Library Attendant Volunteer

Our library volunteers support our Open Treasure exhibition staff by helping to supervise and monitor the Sharp Library. This modern theological and local history library lies within the Monk’s Dormitory of Open Treasure.

Volunteers issue and return books and reader records, shelve books and assist with reader enquiries and catalogue searches.

Henson Transcription Volunteer

Our Transcription Volunteers, under the guidance of the Assistant Librarian, help to transcribe volumes of Bishop Henson’s journals.

This is part of a project in partnership with Durham University.

We are looking for accuracy and attention to detail from volunteers. We need ICT skills and the ability to type and edit Word documents to an intermediate level or above.

Special collections handling experience is desirable but training can be given.

Documentation Volunteer

As a Documentation Volunteer you will help input data into Adlib, the Cathedral’s collections management system. Tasks will include:

  • image labelling
  • scanning
  • collection research
  • occasional assistance with photography and/or object handling

Experience of museum documentation and collections management systems is useful but training and support will also be given.

Please email volunteers@durhamcathedral.co.uk for more information.

We will advertise any opportunities on our main volunteering page.

What is Open Treasure?

Open Treasure is our special exhibition wing housed within the monastic buildings. Exhibitions are themed around the Cathedral’s own collections. They are linked to topics of local interest and often include loans from other major institutions.
