The Cathedral holds a vast collection of modern works.

Modern collections

These include:

  • publications on the Cathedral itself
  • classics of Anglican theology
  • British history
  • 19th century works on antiquities and archaeology
  • works about North East England
  • relevant and ongoing periodical runs including Scriptorium, Northern History and Archaeologia Aeliana

The Archdeacon Sharp Library

This modern theology lending library has about 10,000 English titles. It supports:

  • clergy who are either serving or retired from service within the dioceses of Durham and Newcastle
  • those studying for Ordination, Reader ministry and other theological courses
  • the teaching and research needs of the members of Durham University
  • local residents interested in academic theology

It is owned by the Lord Crewe Trustees and housed in the Cathedral Library.
