A survivor of history

Durham Cathedral’s archive is one of the most complete and extensive monastic archives to survive in Britain in its original location.

Dating back to the late 11th century

The archives are of exceptional importance for the medieval period, and include three issues of the Magna Carta and their corresponding Charters of the Forest.

The post-dissolution archive is a significant source for the social and economic history of the north east of England.

The archive also holds important maps and architectural drawings.

How to view the archive

The Cathedral’s archive is managed on the Cathedral’s behalf by Durham University Special Collections.
