the manuscript treasures

Durham Cathedral Library descends from the Library of the monastery founded at Lindisfarne by St Aidan in 635. It contains many very ancient treasures including manuscripts dating from the 6th century and the finest collection of medieval manuscripts in an English Cathedral. These include celebrated volumes from Anglo-Saxon Northumbria and spectacular books associated with the great Norman bishops.

Some of these manuscripts will be displayed as part of a rolling programme of exhibitions in the Collections Gallery, part of Open Treasure. For information about accessing the manuscripts for academic research, please contact
