Accessing the Cathedral’s modern book collections

Usual opening hours are listed below - Please note: Durham Cathedral Library is currently closed due to inclement weather. The Sharp Library will reopen at 10.00am on Monday 5th March. We apologise for any inconvenience caused by this closure.

The Sharp Library and Chapter Library, based in the Monks’ Dormitory at Durham Cathedral, is open to readers from Monday to Friday, 10.00am – 4.30pm (last entrance 4.00pm).

All visitors need to sign in at the Exhibition Desk in the Monks’ Dormitory and present their Diocesan Reader card or Durham University card to access the Library. If you do not have a reader card, please ask a member of staff who will direct you to the Library where you can register as a Library reader.

Accessing the Cathedral’s special collections

Access to Durham Cathedral’s special collections, including the Refectory early printed book, music, and antiquary collections, is by appointment only. Special collections appointments are held in the Barker Reading Room (accessible via the Monks’ Dormitory) and are available from Tuesday – Thursday between 10am – 1pm and 2pm – 4.30pm. Access to Durham Cathedral’s medieval manuscript collection is currently administered by staff at Palace Green Library. Materials will be available by appointment only, Monday to Friday, 9.00am – 4.45pm. Please contact the library at 0191 3862489 / library@durhamcathedral.co.uk to make an appointment.
