The Cathedral Works’ Yard team has been in place in one form or another since the Cathedral was built.
There are masons who use traditional methods that are centuries old, carpenters, gardeners and a variety of technicians who conserve and care for the building and its surroundings. We also have a resident archaeologist who is always on hand to carry out investigative work and give advice. The Yard staff carry out work on a daily basis around the Cathedral, its Claustral Buildings, the Cathedral Close known as the College, and on the Woodlands and Riverbanks. The Works’ Yard is part of the Cathedral’s Property Department which also includes a Conservation Architect.
Work varies from complex stone renewal projects such as the recent conservation on the East End of the Cathedral to enabling works as part of our ongoing development project Open Treasure.
Work in progress includes:
Stone renewal to the East End
Installation of an access ramp to the Monks’ Garden
Maintenance to stone work on the Riverbanks
