Please note: The Cathedral Library will be closed between Monday 13 February – Friday 17 February, reopening on Monday 20 February 2017. This is due to an exhibition changeover taking place in Open Treasure.
Accessing the Cathedral’s modern book collections
The Sharp Library and Chapter Library, based in the Monks’ Dormitory at Durham Cathedral, is open to readers from Monday to Friday, 10.00am – 4.30pm (last entrance 4.00pm).
All visitors need to sign in at the Exhibition Desk in the Monks’ Dormitory and present their Diocesan Reader card or Durham University card to access the Library. If you do not have a reader card, please ask a member of staff who will direct you to the Library where you can register as a Library reader.
Accessing the Cathedral’s special collections
Access to Durham Cathedral’s special collections, including the Refectory early printed book, music, and antiquary collections, is by appointment only. Special collections appointments are held in the Barker Reading Room (accessible via the Monks’ Dormitory) and are available from Tuesday – Thursday between 10am – 1pm and 2pm – 4.30pm. Access to Durham Cathedral’s medieval manuscript collection will still be administered by staff at Palace Green Library until October 2017. Materials will be available by appointment only, Monday to Friday, 9.00am – 4.45pm. Please contact the library at 0191 3862489 / firstname.lastname@example.org to make an appointment.
