Non-Executive Member (Canon Treasurer) Role Description
As a member of Chapter, you will carry out your duties in support of the mission of Durham Cathedral which include:
- Trustee responsibility for governance, leadership and strategic direction and oversight of the administration of the Cathedral’s affairs – including the management of risk, setting policies and ensuring compliance with our legal obligations.
- Bringing expertise and insights from your professional experience elsewhere.
- A commitment to collective decision-making and to our values, including a commitment to ensuring safeguarding is fully integrated into our activities, and a recognition of the importance of confidentiality.
- Spending time praying for the Cathedral, and involvement as an Honorary Canon in the worshipping and ceremonial life of the Cathedral.
The Canon Treasurer has a number of additional responsibilities:
- Regular interaction with the Chief Operating Officer and Chief Financial Officer, providing guidance and ensuring appropriate systems, controls and checks are in place to provide effective financial management of the Cathedral.
- Chairing of the statutory Finance Committee (which meets quarterly), which reports to Chapter.
- Attendance at the quarterly Audit and Risk committee.
- Membership of the Investment and property committee.

Timeline
- Closing date for receipt of completed application form: Monday 28 October 2024 9am.
- Short initial interviews with long-listed candidates: Friday 8 November 2024
- Short-listed candidates will be invited to come to the Cathedral to enable them to meet key individuals and familiarise themselves with our work.
- Main panel interviews will take place on Thursday 28 November 2024, following an evening social event with members of the Chapter the day before.
- Following the receipt of satisfactory references and safeguarding checks, there will be a final meeting of the preferred candidate with the Acting Bishop of Durham. When the Bishop has given consent, a formal recommendation for appointment will be made to Chapter.
