Durham Cathedral announce digital celebrations for St Cuthbert’s Day

15 March 2021

Durham Cathedral is pleased to announce a series of special services to mark St Cuthbert’s Day on 20 March 2021.

The following special services will be live-streamed to the cathedral’s Facebook page:

  • Friday19 March, 5.15pm: Festal Evensong for the Eve of St Cuthbert’s Day, including prayers in the Shrine of St Cuthbert
  • Saturday 20 March, 8.30am: Eucharist for St Cuthbert’s Day from St Cuthbert’s Shrine
  • Saturday 20 March, 5.15pm: Evensong for the Eve of Passiontide

The first two services will celebrate the life and legacy of St Cuthbert who lived as a monk, bishop, and then hermit on Lindisfarne and was revered during his own lifetime for his preaching and holiness. The  cathedral was specifically built to house Cuthbert’s relics, which lie at the heart of Durham Cathedral in the Feretory.

The Reverend Canon Michael Hampel, Vice-Dean and Precentor at Durham Cathedral said: “We are fortunate that despite our celebrations for the great Northern saint differing from the norm for the second consecutive year,  we are still able to mark this special feast day with our dispersed International congregation online. It would be wonderful, if as many of you could join us to mark the occasion, wherever you may be in the world”.

There will be no public services in church during this time, but the cathedral remains open daily for private prayer and quiet reflection 11am to 2pm.
