Durham Cathedral is supporting Durham Pride 2019

26 May 2019

Durham Cathedral is taking part in Durham Pride parade, which takes place on Sunday 26th May at 12.30pm.   This is the first time it has done so affirming the Church of England’s recognition of the place of all Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender (LGBT) people in the life of the Church.  This supports the Archbishop of Canterbury’s call for a radical Christian inclusion of LGBT people in the Church’s witness.

The Cathedral’s participation in Durham Pride emphasises and supports this affirmation and inclusion. As the Archbishop has made clear, the perception that the Church is homophobic and transphobic is harming our mission, especially to young people.

Durham Pride’s objective is to raise awareness and educate the public about the issues and difficulties affecting the lives of LGBT people in and around County Durham. It is this principal objective which the Cathedral supports.
