Durham Cathedral to reduce opening hours and public services due to Coronavirus

Durham Cathedral remains open for private prayer and quiet reflection, but will operate reduced opening hours and in-person services from Wednesday 13 January to reflect the current Coronavirus restrictions in England. 

From 13 January, Durham Cathedral will be open daily 11am-2pm for private prayer and quiet reflection. The only service that will be open to the public in-person will be the 12.30pm Holy Communion which takes place Monday to Saturday. The rest of the cathedral’s services will be closed to the public, but will continue to be live-streamed to the cathedral’s Facebook page. The online service schedule is as follows: 

Monday- Saturday

  • 8.30am Morning Prayer 
  • 12.30pm Holy Communion (open to the public with no booking required, not available online)
  • 5.15pm Evening Prayer (Monday) or Choral Evensong (Tuesday to Saturday) 


  •  8.30am Morning Prayer 
  •  9.30am Sung Eucharist
  • 3.30pm Choral Evensong

The adults of Durham Cathedral Choir will continue to sing in reduced numbers at Evensong (Tuesday to Sunday) and Sung Eucharist on Sundays.

Face coverings must be worn inside the cathedral, except for those who are medically exempt.
