It takes two to...support Foundation 2020

20 May 2019

Tango and House of Gentlemen are the latest businesses to sign up to Durham Cathedral’s 2020 Club in support of Foundation 2020.

Tango, a restaurant located on Elvet Bridge in the shadow of the cathedral, prides itself on being the “Home of great food, home-made from scratch, using the best local stuff.” House of Gentleman, at the other end of Elvet Bridge, is a classic barbershop and male grooming provider.

Matthew Kirk, Relationship and Development Manager at Durham Cathedral, said: “It’s great to see small independent business at the heart of the city supporting the Foundation 2020 campaign. When the cathedral is thriving that momentum overflows into the city, and similarly when businesses thrive the cathedral benefits immeasurably. We are delighted to cement that bond with Tango and House of Gentlemen, businesses that work hard to offer top quality services to their customers and help raise the profile of our great city.”

Sam Gadd and Zak Newton who run both businesses, said: “Supporting anything ‘Durham’ is a good thing and there's nothing more quintessentially ‘Durham’ than the cathedral. It makes our town a city, and makes our city great. We feel it only right to invest in our culture & heritage, and supporting Foundation 2020 offers us that opportunity. We hope that our grandchildren's children will get to see our magnificent cathedral in the excellent condition that it is in today and by donating, we are doing our part to make that a reality.”

Foundation 2020 is aiming to build a fund of £10million that will pay for the annual routine repair works of Durham Cathedral buildings through the interest generated each year. The donation made by Tango and House of Gentlemen will therefore contribute to our annual repairs forever. Thanks to pound for pound match funding from the National Lottery Heritage Fund the 2020 campaign is having an even greater impact.
