Statement on Durham Cathedral's staff consultation

06 November 2020

Covid-19 has created unprecedented and challenging times.

A significant number of cathedral staff have been on the Coronavirus Job Retention Scheme, which has been invaluable, enabling the cathedral to keep people in employment since March.

The cathedral reopened for private prayer early summer, and later, to visitors in a limited way, as well as for daily worship.  Income streams are hard-hit, and it will clearly be some time before normal operations can resume, even more so considering the further national lockdown to the 2nd December.

There has been an assessment of job roles required to carry out current operations.  Some posts were identified as being 'at risk' of significantly reduced hours or redundancy and have been the focus of the period of consultation.  It is with great sadness that those post holders ‘at risk’ were to asked come forward for voluntary redundancy, and it is with a heavy heart that some of the cathedral’s valued staff have left its employment. They will be sorely missed, and we wish them well.
