EXPLORE OPEN TREASURE, OUR NEW WORLD-CLASS EXHIBITION EXPERIENCE in THE MOST INTACT SURVIVING SET OF MEDIEVAL MONASTIC BUILDINGS IN THE UK.

The journey begins in the magnificent fourteenth-century Monks' Dormitory where the monks of Durham Cathedral once slept. Here you can discover the fascinating history of Durham Cathedral and the spread of Christianity in North-East England, brought to life through interactive exhibits and activities for visitors of all ages.

The journey continues in the state-of-the-art Collections Gallery with an exciting rolling exhibition programme showcasing items from the Cathedral's collections.  From Tuesday 28 November 2017 - Saturday 3 February 2018 it features Saintly Sisters - focusing on the lives and legacies of female saints with a particular link to Durham or the North; well-known figures such as St Hild or St Margaret, but also some who are today less well-known, such as St Osana and St Ebbe. Find out who these women were, how they came to be saints, and why they were so highly regarded across the region. The exhibition will also explore the significance of these saints to female medieval pilgrims, and the continuing pilgrimage tradition at Durham Cathedral.

Next, discover the monastic Great Kitchen, with its stunning octagonal ceiling. This amazing space is now the permanent home of The Treasures of St Cuthbert, some of the most important Anglo-Saxon artefacts in the UK!

Finally, visitors can explore the new interactive Pilgrimage Gallery and Community Gallery before returning to the medieval Cloister via the Covey.

We hope you enjoy your visit!
