Stefan Piotrowicz joined Durham Cathedral as Organ Scholar in September 2021, where his duties include regularly accompanying the cathedral choir for services and teaching the probationers and choristers.
Stefan received his formative musical training at Chetham’s School of Music, Manchester, gaining a Joint-First-Study place aged 7. He studied Piano with Susan Bettaney, achieving a Grade 5 Distinction within his first term, and performed in school orchestras, chamber choir and Stockport Youth Orchestra. He subsequently ventured north, to St Mary’s Music School in Edinburgh, where he studied Harpsichord with John Kitchen, and played continuo for various ensembles, including Edinburgh University String Orchestra.
After leaving school, Stefan undertook a joint organ scholarship at St Mary’s Episcopal Cathedral and St Giles’ Cathedral in Edinburgh. His duties included accompanying both Cathedral choirs and assisting in the training of the probationers and choristers at St Mary's. He also acted as rehearsal accompanist for St Mary’s Cathedral voluntary choir, the Chapter House Singers. He played continuo for a performance of Buxtehude’s Membra Jesu Nostri during the Edinburgh Festival and has played for civic services, including the Legal service, at St Giles’ Cathedral.
Stefan is active as a recitalist and has given numerous recitals in venues including Blenheim Palace, Chesterfield Parish Church, Kelvingrove Art Gallery and St Cecilia’s Hall, Edinburgh. He has also participated in masterclasses by Henry Fairs, Gordon Stewart and Susan Landale and courses from the Royal College of Organists. He also holds the Licentiate Diploma from Trinity College London and the Associateship of the Royal College of Organists.
