Head of Works

Gary oversees the team of stonemasons and joiners tasked with the repair and maintenance of Durham Cathedral and precinct. 

The team Gary leads encompasses a wide range of activities, from addressing minor repairs documented in the internal repair log to managing extensive conservation projects outlined in the quinquennial report.

Background:

After starting his apprenticeship as a stonemason in 2001, Gary went on to work with a building conservation company in the northwest of England, dealing with projects focused on cathedral buildings and parish churches throughout the region.

In 2015, he joined the cathedral as a stonemason and received a Fellowship from The Society for the Protection of Ancient Buildings. In 2018, Gary was promoted to stonemason supervisor, and in 2024, assumed the role of Head of Works.
