Help us extend a welcome to all who come to Cathedral services, from regular congregation members to visitors.

Servers are volunteers who help at Eucharist and other major services. They assist the priest during the service with a number of duties.

Tasks include carrying the Cross (crucifer) or the candles (acolytes).

Servers can carry banners, read the Gospel and assist with the preparation of the altar at communion services. Experienced servers may administer the chalice.

Occasionally at special services there may be incense. This is carried in a container by a Thurifer, who is a Senior Altar Server.

  • helping the audience to safety in case of an emergency

Volunteer Vergers

The Vergers are a busy team who are responsible for verging during services.

Verging refers to the carrying of the verge - the metal rod carried at the front of a procession or during a service when someone is led to the pulpit or lectern to preach or read.

Other duties undertaken by the vergers include preparing the interior of the Cathedral and associated spaces for services and special events.
