Advent and Christmas

Epiphany lands on the 12th day of Christmas, bringing the Christmas season to an end. We celebrate this day with a Sung Eucharist for Epiphany, where we mark the visit of the Magi to the Christ-child, the moment when God’s glory was revealed to the nations of the world. The service took place on the 6 January. 

We celebrate Epiphany with a procession which encapsulates the significant milestones in the epiphany season - the wise men coming, the baptism of Jesus and his first miracle, the wedding of Cana, where he changes water into wine. See more about this service, which takes place on 19 January, here.

• Wrap up warm and enjoy the fresh air with walks around the riverbanks and woodlands surrounding the cathedral. 
• Treat yourself with a hot drink from the café and try one of the delicious homemade sweet treats. 
• Find out how the cathedral was founded by wandering monks, the many changes over the years and how the building has survived centuries of history, in a 1-hour tour with one our expert volunteer guides. 
• Take a moment of reflection, perhaps to remember those who won't be with us this year. Light a candle, come to a service if you would like to, or speak to a chaplain if you would like someone to share your thoughts with.
• The 27ft Christmas tree and Durham Cathedral's mining-themed nativity scene, will be on display from 15 December until early January.
• Pick up a free family activity leaflet from the Visitor Desk, from mid-November, filled with puzzles and activities around the Christmas story

This year, as part of the Durham Cathedral Christmas Appeal, we are delighted to support the Salvation Army at Sanctuary 21 in Durham City. Sanctuary 21 will receive half of all donations, with the other half supporting the cathedral's ongoing ministry of welcome and hospitality. 

Sanctuary 21 support homeless and vulnerable people in our community. Volunteers give their time to provide hot meals, clothing, and give other practical support, as well as the signposting of important services.
