Miners: Pitmen, pride and prayer

2018 sees two significant anniversaries within the heritage of coalmining:

  • 75 years since the founding of The Bevin Boys
  • 25 years since the closure of the last colliery in the County Durham coalfield

This exhibition explores the enduring legacy of coalmining among the communities of Durham and North East England.

 

Armistice: Living with the peace

25 September 2018 - Early 2019

On 11th November 1918 an armistice ended World War I in Western Europe, although peace would not fully return for many more months.

Commemorating the 100th anniversary of this momentous event, this exhibition explores what it meant. It explores its impact on the people of Durham and the north east as World War I ended, soldiers came home, and peace was gradually restored.
