Special Service: Ash Wednesday

Wednesday 6 March

Ash Wednesday marks the beginning of Lent which is the 40-day period (not including Sundays) of fasting and repentance leading up to Easter.

Our Lenten journey begins with Eucharist at 7.30am, followed by Morning Prayer at 8.45am, Eucharist at 12.30pm, Evensong at 5.15pm and a sung Eucharist at 7.30pm.

Palm crosses from Palm Sunday of the previous year are burnt, and their remaining ashes are blessed at the 7.30pm Eucharist. The sign of the cross is made on our foreheads, using the ash, and is a sign of penitence and a symbol of mortality. Participants resolve to turn away from sin and be faithful to Christ.
