Lighting of the Christmas Tree and Blessing of the Crib service

Sunday 12 December at 3:30 PM

This special service will get the whole family into the festive spirit as the lights on the 20 feet tall Christmas tree are switched on.

Watch in awe as the lights adorning the 20 feet tall Norwegian Spruce are switched on. The clergy and choir will then process to the west end of the cathedral, where the crib will be blessed. This special service is the perfect way to begin your Christmas celebrations with the whole family.

This service will be live-streamed on Durham Cathedral’s Facebook page. You’ll be able to rewatch the service for three days after it’s first broadcast.

Please book a ticket in advance

If you’d like to attend this service in person, you must book a free ticket in advance.

Please ensure that all members of your party, including children, have a valid ticket to access this event. This is because we need to know how many people are inside the cathedral, and limit numbers in line with our COVID-19 risk assessments.

Keeping everybody safe

Upon entry to the cathedral, all visitors over the age of 18 must be prepared to show their NHS COVID Pass as proof of vaccination, a negative PCR or lateral flow test taken up to 48 hours before the event, or a positive PCR test from within the last 6 months.

We encourage visitors to wear a face covering in enclosed and crowded spaces where people come into contact with people they don’t normally meet.
