Open Treasure: Restoration, Redesign, Renovation: Durham Cathedral in the 19th century

Monday 27 January to Sunday 10 May at 12:00 AM

After a period of ‘misguided stewardships and carelessness’, the 19th century was a time for restoration and redevelopment at Durham Cathedral. The goal was to make the cathedral more welcoming to worshippers, pilgrims and tourists alike. This temporary exhibition in Open Treasure, the cathedral's museum, explores some of the ways this was achieved and the people involved who helped to shape the cathedral as we know it today.

Open Treasure is Durham Cathedral's award-winning interactive museum for all ages. Step into the Monks’ Dormitory to discover the sights, smells and sounds of a medieval monastery, learn something new in our ever-changing exhibitions and marvel at the treasures of St Cuthbert in the Great Kitchen. Dressing up activities bring Durham Cathedral’s history to life and kids will love our explorer backpacks, exhibition trails and much more!

The Sixteen: The Choral Pilgrimage 2020: The Call of Rome

Friday 16 October at 7:30 PM
2020 marks the 20th anniversary of The Sixteen’s annual Choral Pilgrimage tour. Since 2000 the choir have travelled the length and breadth of the UK, discovering some of the country’s most beautiful architecture and building relationships with wonderful communities, many of which they return to year after year.

This year’s tour focuses on Rome, a city which has inspired countless pilgrimages, and where each of the four composers in this year’s programme created some of their finest work. Motets by Josquin and F. Anerio are framed by Victoria’s powerful Tenebrae Responsories for Holy Saturday, culminating in Allegri’s eternal Miserere.
