We have lots of roles to choose from involving volunteering along Durham's woodlands and riverbanks.

A haven for all

Durham Cathedral owns about two thirds of the city centre riverbanks.

This wooded area provides a haven for wildlife, residents and visitors to the city.

Conservation tasks

You can get involved with the riverbank and woodland management activities and ongoing maintenance. Activities include:

  • clearing invasive vegetation
  • building fences
  • repairing footpaths
  • tree and seed planting
  • litter picking

Team members are always supervised by qualified staff.

Events team members and guides

Would you like to help our staff run holiday and weekend activities in our beautiful woodlands?

You could help to supervise families and children in a range of activities from bird box making to animal identification and tree dressing.

Woodlands and Riverbanks Guides

There are numerous footpaths and points of interest along the riverbanks. These include stunning views of the Cathedral and the Durham World Heritage Site.

We are always delighted to train volunteers to be guided walk leaders.

Education Guides

Our woodlands and riverbanks act as brilliant outdoor classrooms. Please take a look at our volunteer Education Guides page for more information.
