We've been working with local primary schools since 2003 to get children singing

Why do we think music is so important?

Music is at the heart of the life of the Cathedral. We believe anyone can sing, and the benefits of singing can be life changing. It is good aerobic exercise and helps develop cognitive learning skills.

We want children to experience the joy of singing and the sense of achievement it can bring.

Participating in music in this way has also been shown to boost children’s confidence and encourage positive social skills.

Which schools are involved?

We work with primary schools throughout Durham, South Tyneside and Sunderland. Around 800 children take part each year.

What happens?

Each term the Cathedral Choristers, the Master of the Choristers and Organist and our Director of Music Outreach work with up to eight schools to perform to and sing with a complete year group.

After the visit we continue to work with the participating schools to help prepare pupils for Music Outreach Celebration service at the Cathedral.

A special occasion

All participating schools have the chance to sing together in the magnificent Cathedral in front of family and friends. Teachers also sing which is always warmly received by their pupils!

The celebrations at the Cathedral are lively musical occasions giving everyone a day to remember.

More than just a performance

The programme also works with the teachers from each school. We help them develop choral leadership skills. This allows singing to continue to flourish beyond simply the Celebration service.
