What is Holy Week?

Holy Week is the week between Palm Sunday and Easter Sunday, the holiest week of the Christian year as we celebrate the passion, death and resurrection of Jesus Christ.

We walk the way of the cross with Our Lord, stand at the foot of his cross, and celebrate his resurrection.

Music for Lent and Easter

Just as at every other time of year, the anthems and hymns sung by Durham Cathedral Choir reflect the mood and themes of the season.

Bach: St John Passion

Durham Cathedral Choir will be performing Bach's masterpiece with period instrument performers The Avison Ensemble on Tuesday 12 April, the Tuesday of Holy Week. Find more information here.

Family activities at Easter-time

Enjoy drop-in activities suitable for children of all ages throughout the Easter holidays at the cathedral. Inside the cathedral from Monday 18 - Sunday 24 April, make your own egg-shaped Easter decoration to take home and follow a trail around the cathedral.

On Easter Monday, 18 April, don't miss World Heritage Site Day. Celebrating all of the buildings, scenery and history that make up the Durham UNESCO World Heritage site, the day is packed with events and activities at Durham Castle, Durham Cathedral and Palace Green. Meet characters from history who have had an impact over the years, including a monk in the Chapter House, join in with family crafts or sample local produce from the food market stalls.

Explore the riverbank paths and woodland areas surrounding the cathedral with our downloadable trails.
