Weddings, baptisms and funerals

This Cathedral is held in deep affection by many people from across the world. We are regularly asked whether people can hold baptisms, weddings and funerals here.

In nearly every case we refer people to their local parish clergy. It is their privilege to baptise, marry and bury those who live in the areas for which they have spiritual responsibility.

Who is eligible to be baptised, married or hold their funeral in the Cathedral?

We do occasionally hold weddings, baptisms and funerals in the Cathedral. However these special services are only for the regular members of the Cathedral congregation recorded on our Community Roll and who regularly worship with us. There are very few exceptions.

Are you sure I can’t get married in the Cathedral?

We regularly receive requests for the celebration of weddings from people living throughout the county and beyond. Church of England laws define who is permitted to marry in cathedrals. In almost every case we direct couples to contact their own parish clergy.
