Location: Durham Cathedral
Contract: FixedTerm
Salary: Residentiary Canon Stipend in accordance with rates issued by Church Commissioners
Hours: The normal weekly timetable is as follows, (subject to review): Full time

Job description

The Bishop and Chapter are looking for an influential and inspirational Canon Precentor & Vice Dean, following Canon David Kennedy’s distinguished service to Durham Cathedral.  At ‘the best Cathedral on planet earth’ we are seeking a colleague who will play a vital and strategic role in enhancing the governance, leadership and liturgical life of the Cathedral.

You will possess proven theological, strategic and leadership capability and will be passionate about our core purpose, committed to enabling the whole Cathedral community to live our values, deliver our strategic objectives and fulfil our vision.

As a member of Chapter you will draw upon your substantial experience of working at Board level and will work collaboratively with colleagues to build upon the foundations already laid in corporate governance, financial sustainability and project management.  You will also act in all matters in the absence of the Dean.

Thriving on working closely with a talented management team of professionals in their own field, you will use your successful track record of strategic and operational leadership, complemented by your personal skills and presence, to engage, influence and inspire those with whom you work.  With energy and resilience you will lead on all aspects of liturgy and music and undertake the role of Custos of the Chorister School, offering day-to-day liaison with the Cathedral and pastoral care for staff and pupils.

Being a ‘mission-shaped’ person of prayer, who is theologically articulate and who possesses the ability to stimulate through intelligent preaching, you will be influential in the mission of the Cathedral and play a key role in its liturgical life.

If you aspire to be a key leader in the future of ‘Britain’s Favourite Cathedral’ (2017), part of the Durham UNESCO World Heritage Site, then we would love to hear from you. Should you wish to have a confidential discussion about this role, please call Ian Hunter, Head of HR&OD in the first instance on (0191) 386 4266, who will make the appropriate arrangements.
