This year, as part of the Durham Cathedral Christmas Appeal, we are delighted to support the Salvation Army at Sanctuary 21 in Durham City. Sanctuary 21 will receive half of all donations, with the other half supporting the cathedral's ongoing ministry of welcome and hospitality. 

Sanctuary 21 support homeless and vulnerable people in our community. Volunteers give their time to provide hot meals, clothing, and give other practical support, as well as the signposting of important services.

Durham Cathedral has been a place of sanctuary since the Middle Ages. The great Sanctuary Ring is a testament to that tradition and still today, through chaplaincy, candle-lighting, and the Chapter House warm space, the Cathedral seeks to welcome all who come.

Christmas can be a difficult time for some, and your donations will support those needing sanctuary in 21st century Durham, both socially and spiritually.

We care for some of the world's favourite medieval buildings.

Built mainly between 1093 and 1133 by some of Europe's finest craftsmen, Durham was the first UK cathedral to be inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Donations to our Fabric Fund maintain the cathedral church and buildings, from fabulous stonework to stained glass, for future generations.

We are inspired by the teaching of Jesus Christ to love our neighbour.

Service has always been a distinctive part of Christian life, including at Durham Cathedral. The cathedral office itself was built as an almshouse, where those in need could receive food and children some education.

For over a decade, the cathedral has had a collection point for County Durham Foodbank, which was seeded by the Trussell Trust. We also collect cash donations, to enable the Foodbank to purchase vital supplies.
