Over many centuries, thousands of people have given what they can to make Durham Cathedral the amazing place it is today.

Become part of the story

Cathedral life is incredibly diverse.

Prayer, worship and the welcome of visitors (around half a million each year) have always been central to life at Durham Cathedral.

We also care for buildings and collections of international significance, train apprenctices in heritage skills, protect part of the River Wear and Durham's green spaces, and much more.

None of this would be possible without the generosity of donations to our General Fund, supporting any area of need.

We care for some of the world's favourite medieval buildings.

Built mainly between 1093 and 1133 by some of Europe's finest craftsmen, Durham was the first UK cathedral to be inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Donations to our Fabric Fund maintain the cathedral church and buildings, from fabulous stonework to stained glass, for future generations.

We are passionate about the future of cathedral music.

Music can elevate, transport and heal, and cathedral music is one of the UK's great cultural treasures. At Durham, we have been creating opportunities for talented musicians for centuries.

Donations to our Music Fund support everything from a means-tested bursary scheme for choristers to our unique organ.

Give love

We are inspired by the teaching of Jesus Christ to love our neighbour.

Service has always been a distinctive part of Christian life, including at Durham Cathedral. The cathedral office itself was built as an almshouse, where those in need could receive food and children some education.

For over a decade, the cathedral has had a collection point for County Durham Foodbank, which was seeded by the Trussell Trust. We also collect cash donations, to enable the Foodbank to purchase vital supplies.

Durham may be a small city, but its reach is global.

From international pilgrims and members of our Community of Prayer, to generations of students at Durham University, matriculating and graduating here, we know that Durham Cathedral is cherished by people across the world.

International supporters are a vital part of our community.

Donations, of any size, may be made in US dollars, euros, Canadian dollars or Australian dollars. In the USA, the cathedral is an approved partner of the British Schools and Universities Foundation (BSUF), a not-for-profit organisation supporting tax-efficient giving to the UK and the Commonwealth.
