We asked two apprentices to share what they love about learning on the job at Durham Cathedral.
What do you love about the job?
I really enjoy the variety of work and unique experiences working here provides. Learning on the job has enabled me to produce work of a high standard in short time frames. I feel more efficient all
the time.
What are you most proud of?
We have been working on the Monks Garden wall. I am very proud of the arch stones I produced. They are the most complicated pieces I have produced for the cathedral.
Would you recommend doing an apprenticeship?
My advice is to simply go for it. You will never know if you don't try.
What do you love about the job?
The variety of work is fantastic. There’s a real chance to experience so many different aspects of joinery and carpentry. It's very interesting and I’m learning a wide range of skills.
What’s the best thing you’ve worked on?
The buildings are so impressive. Currently we are planning a renovation and conversion of parts of the Deanery. Having the opportunity to work on this historic building is amazing and the converted rooms will be a completely new space, utilised for a
long time.
Would you recommend doing an apprenticeship?
Absolutely. The best way to learn a new role is by doing the job. And you're never too old! I started my apprenticeship at 36 and am really enjoying learning a new career in something I am passionate about.
