The programme, developed by the Cathedrals’ Workshop Fellowship (CWF) and funded by a £1.5 million grant from Benefact Trust, will train over 30 scholars in traditional heritage crafts over the next four years. These include vital skills such as stonemasonry, which are essential for the ongoing care and conservation of our nation’s cathedrals.
Durham Cathedral is a member of the Cathedrals’ Workshop Fellowship - an association of Anglican cathedrals established to provide education and training for the craftspeople who maintain our cathedrals and other historic buildings. Benefact Trust is a grant-making charity committed to making a significant impact on society – giving people, communities, and places a renewed opportunity to flourish.
The official launch of the Benefact Trust Scholars Programme took place at Lichfield Cathedral on 23rd June, bringing together cathedral representatives, heritage leaders, and the first cohort of scholars to celebrate the beginning of this exciting programme.
The first 16 Benefact Trust Scholars will begin their placements in September 2025, including at Durham Cathedral, where they will contribute to the ongoing preservation of one of the UK’s most treasured buildings.
Durham Cathedral will welcome scholars and offer hands-on support and mentorship within its own historic setting. The programme not only provides accredited qualifications and practical experience but also ensures that the knowledge and craftsmanship required to maintain our rich heritage is passed on to future generations.
