Durham Cathedral launches plans for Vision 2033

During Hospitality Week 2025, Durham Cathedral shared its hopes, prayers and plans for the years leading up to 2033 with staff, volunteers, Friends of Durham Cathedral, stakeholders and Diocesan colleagues.

The last week of June saw Durham Cathedral welcome hundreds of people to special events for Hospitality Week. As well as a thank you for all the support from our communities, colleagues and stakeholders, the week also marked the launch of Vision 2033.

The Very Revd Dr Philip Plyming, Dean of Durham spoke at each event about Vision 2033 and shared exciting plans for the future of the cathedral. Philip shared the key priorities for the years ahead and was joined by stakeholders from across the community who contributed with their excitement for the vision.

Looking ahead to the 900th anniversary of Durham Cathedral's completion, Vision 2033 was welcomed and applauded at each of the launch events, with positive feedback for the prioirties which include Encountering God, Prayer, Pilgrimage and Proclamation.

Hospitality Week began on Monday 23 June by inviting Durham Cathedral Volunteers to an afternoon tea in the Chapter House in recognition of their dedication and commitment. Philip Plyiming, Dean of Durham introduced a video which showcased the 2033 Vision, and volunteers left with a brochure detailing future plans.

The week continued with a sunny evening hosting leaders across the Durham Diocese and faith networks on Tuesday, and Wednesday morning saw staff come together for breakfast before challenging each other to games in the Cloister and on the Cloister Garth.
