Durham Cathedral welcomed the Venerable Rick Simpson to a special service of Choral Evensong on Thursday 19 February, following the announcement of his appointment as the next Bishop of Durham.

Rick, who is currently the Archdeacon of Auckland, spent the day touring the Diocese following the announcement of his appointment. He concluded his day at the Cathedral, praying at the Shrine of St Cuthbert before attending Choral Evensong, sung by the Chapel Choir of St Chad’s College, Durham. The service included prayers for him as he prepares to take up the role later this year.

The Dean of Durham, the Very Reverend Dr Philip Plyming, led the service and afterwards hosted a reception for Archdeacon Rick which was attended by leading figures from civic, university and ecumenical life. Guests included the Lord Lieutenant of County Durham, Dame Sue Snowden, the Vice-Chancellor of Durham University, Professor Karen O’Brien, and the Mayor of Durham, Councillor Gary Hutchinson.

Speaking after the service, Philip said,

‘It was wonderful to welcome Rick to the Cathedral on such a special day. Durham Cathedral has served as the seat of the Bishop of Durham for over 900 years, and we are looking forward to serving with Rick in the years to come in the mission and ministry God has called him to in this Diocese and beyond. Above all, we will be praying for him in all that lies ahead, asking that God will give him the strength and wisdom he needs for the role.’
