Durham Cathedral is delighted to announce the appointment of George Carter as Chief Finance Officer, from 1 March 2025.
In the position of Chief Finance Officer, George will be playing a leading role within the Cathedral's executive and governance teams, ensuring that finances positively enable the delivery of the Cathedral’s mission and vision.
George is a regular member of the Cathedral’s worshipping congregation, and first came to Durham to study an undergraduate degree at the University in 1994. Following graduation, George pursued a career in financial services, qualifying as an actuary before moving into investment management. Before returning to Durham in 2023, George worked as managing director of the New Zealand division of Nikko asset management, a Japanese investment management firm.
On his new role, George commented,
“Durham Cathedral holds a unique place in our County and is rightly cherished as a place of worship, prayer and historical significance. It is therefore an enormous privilege to become the CFO and to have this opportunity to play a role in the custodianship of our great cathedral. Under the leadership of Philip as Dean, and Guy as COO I am excited by what the future holds as we seek to ensure that everyone who comes to Durham Cathedral can find a way to encounter God as they enjoy the beauty, history and splendour of Durham Cathedral.”
Welcoming his appointment Guy Sampson, Chief Operating Officer, commented,
"I am delighted that George will be taking the position of Chief Finance Officer. George's experience and skills around finance, business management and leadership, together with his understanding of Durham Cathedral, means that he is well placed to make an excellent contribution. I know colleagues from across the Cathedral are very much looking forward to working with George in this role."
George and his wife live in Durham, and are enjoying becoming involved in opportunities to serve the community within and beyond the city.
